Art of Attention – Elena Brower – USA
Before teaching yoga and meditation, as a textile designer, a clothing designer, living both in NYC and Italy, I fell in love with fashion and art. After six years of that seasonal, cyclical work, I longed for more connection in my days. After spending one year learning how to teach art to children, I found yoga and started to find myself. That was in 1998.
Since then, I’ve studied with many of the great teachers of our time, opened and closed a yoga studio, loved and lost, had a child, wrote Art of Attention (my first book), taught one of the largest yoga classes on record, started a business, and found my way to sobriety. The choice to be open about my journey has granted me the honour of being in service to others, and now I’m informally “sponsoring” several women across the globe. That’s turned out to be the best part.
Their daily check-ins help me stay in my heart, and remember who I am. They think they’re getting the gift of the assist – but I’m receiving the best gift of all.
The practice of yoga and meditation is how I practice being human. I keep it simple, I make sure I move, sit and listen daily, and that’s helping me be a steady presence for my boy. Going to talks, shows, and exhibits keeps me creatively inspired. Learning to toss what’s no longer needed, both materially and existentially, are helping me keep things super organized and easy for myself. I plan ahead. I take my family on trips that make us happy, and keep us connected. These are all results of my years of yoga, all ways in which I make art of my attention… ritual, steadiness, inspiration, organization, simplicity, happiness. All signs of a good practice.
A few ways to practice making art of your attention: stay close to yourself, and do sweet things for yourself daily. Honour the past, and remember that collaboration is good medicine for the future. Meet new people, listen well, learn from everyone, be grateful, and don’t forget to meditate. Meditation refines your attention, and attention is what allows us to see ourselves, and see within ourselves, in order to elegantly approach anything, everything.
